Elizabeth Debicki’s win at the 2024 Emmys may have been fit for a princess, but it was still a royal shocker to her.
The Crown star revealed that she couldn’t believe she earned her first statuette for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series during the biggest night in television Sept. 15. (See all the winners here.)
“I was surprised,” Elizabeth exclusively told Keltie Knight during E!’s After-Party. “I think the thing that you realize quite quickly when you’re being nominated for things is that it’s wild to be in the category. That alone is kind of outrageous.”
“When you do panels with these women, you think, ‘You’re all amazing, everybody gets a prize,’” she continued. “Really, truly in my heart, I didn’t know that was going to happen. It’s a lovely thing to win but also a little bit strange.” (Among the talented stars she bested: Costar Lesley Manville, The Gilded Age’s Christine Baranski and The Morning Show’s Greta Lee, Nicole Beharie, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor.)
Donning a classic black Christian Dior ballgown featuring a square neckline, she took the stage to accept her Emmy and also gave a sweet shout-out to her hair and makeup artist, Deb Ormrod.
“I’ve been meaning to thank them,” she explained to Keltie. “I don’t look like Princess Diana in real life at all and we were close in the show. I walked in looking like a tired person in pajamas and then I walk out, looking like my character.”
The Great Gatsby actress—who was nominated in the category last year and lost out to The White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge—admitted that she didn’t prepare a speech while onstage.
“I didn’t write anything down because I’m very superstitious and now I’m in a real pickle, so I’m going to do this quickly,” she said before thanking creator Peter Morgan “for making this show and for trusting me with this. To our producers, thank you for your hard work. Deb, my hair and makeup, an amazing woman who transformed me every day. Our cast is so beautiful. It is such a gift to work with you.”
Reflecting on her portrayal of the late princess, she added, “Playing this part based on this unparalleled, incredible human being has been my great privilege. It has been a gift.”
